The Universal Wake Up Call
Updated: Mar 25
Ah good ol' COVID 19. With all the news updates saying how almost every single city is doing some sort of lockdown/quarantine type of situation, it hasn't been bad for me (someone who already works from home), but it might be bad for all of you brick and mortars out there. I mean I really do feel like this is a universal wake up call for everyone to slow the eff down. I know you are probably feeling the loss already, but as a business owner, and you might not want to give up on your social media strategy just yet.
1. Now is the time to get personal.
How can your products help during this pandemic? Did you come down with flu-like symptoms? How does that tie into what you do? I have come down with flu-like symptoms recently, (it's just allergies, damn you Atlanta pollen!), but I am still active on social media, and making calls. However, I also took some of this time to meditate and reflect on my goals. I also did some much-needed self-care, which has admittedly taken a back seat. I am learning to take care of myself more, mentally as well. As an entrepreneur, you must learn that it's not all about the hustle and grind. You have to take care of yourself too.
2. Where are you bleeding in your business right now?
Let's be honest, it's probably sales at this point. So what kind of special can you do right now to keep going during a time where people aren't going to your store, studio or even signing up for your courses because people aren't getting a check from their business right now? Here are some potential ideas:
Free courses or classes (If you are a coach, give some of your courses away)
Giveaway care packages to your most loyal customers
Do a FB or IG live of one of your classes (Debbie Allen just offered a free dance class on IG!) OR just do a live Q&A offering free advice!
Offer discounts! Betabrand offers a 25% discount every time a shopper puts something in their cart but abandons it.
Own a makeup or skincare brand? Offer a free guide on how to keep all of your brushes and other skincare accessories clean and germ-free. You can also offer a discount or promotion around all of your hygiene tools (if you have any).
There are so many things you can do during this pandemic and all of the ideas listed above can definitely boost sales!
3. It's Time to Go Remote!
If you are one of the MANY business owners that just told your staff to work from home, then congratulations! You are ahead of the game. If you haven't gone remote, then you really need to. Put your products online and tell your staff to handle it all from home. If you have an online store, but don't have the infrastructure to handle a remote team.
Here is what you may need:
Video conferencing tools: Zoom, Google Hangouts or Skype for Business
Project management tools: Asana and Trello are the best!
CRM setups: Dubsado and Salesforce
Automatic email systems: Gmail does this pretty well but you can also do this through your CRM!
You might need to get extra industry related stuff to handle everything remotely, but the above is a good start.
4. Relax and Take Some Time Out for Yourself!
If this pandemic taught us anything, it's that we are not presently taking care of ourselves. We are currently living in a society where hustle culture is something to be proud of (spoiler alert: it's not). Working from 8:00 am to 10:00 pm every single day without any sort of time to yourself, is not something to brag about. I actually talked about this recently in another group I am a part of on Facebook. Hustle culture is so stupid and burnout is real. It's now the perfect time for you to appreciate the finer things in life. If the store isn't packed, go get yourself some wine, take a bath, and paint your nails. You should also:
Take a walk outside
Meditate for at least 30 mins
Write in your journal
Learn Tarot or Reiki (I might be doing both!)
Charge your crystals in the sun
Say three affirmations every day when you wake up
Write down three things you are grateful for
Learn to breathe properly (I just learned how to do this!)
If you have a big team, let them handle stuff and take care of yourself first. If you don't have a team, take some breaks during the day. It's so important for your mental health!
I Can't Do it All Right Now, I Need Help!
If you are the many businesses that are currently in a state of slight panic right now because your sales are not where it was in January or February. Don't panic! People do want to buy right now, but it's not what you probably selling. Let's figure something out together as we plan a strategy around what you are currently offering. Are you interested? Please fill out this questionnaire and schedule a call. I would be more than happy to talk to you about your goals, ideas and plans you have for not only right now but for the rest of 2020!
