The Benefits of Becoming Still and Quiet

I know. I know. The title of this post does sound a little woo woo for most people, but trust me this works! I've been meditating since I was twelve years old and it's been a very good tool that I love to use when I started to get stressed out. I don't know about you but my anxiety levels are really high. Newsweek reports that millennials continue to be the most anxious generation. The survey, which Newsweek reported on, done by the American Psychology Association, shows that the rise of student loan debt, low employment rates, and homeownership (or lack thereof) are the biggest causes of anxiety among millennials.


So Much Anxiety, So Little Time!


Whether we want to admit or not, we are all very anxious, and if you are a millennial the chances are your anxiety levels are higher than normal. We all want to live perfectly (seemingly) normal lives but the truth is we live in a world where things are going at a faster than normal pace. I mean we still have the whole "9-5" office gig, which hey I don't hate on, but let's be real. That whole structure was put in place at a time where things like fax machines, typewriters and snail mail where used on a regular basis. I don't think anyone uses any of these things (except maybe fax machines) anymore. Information is flowing at a faster rate and if you are in the digital world like I am, you are looking at getting a lot done within 2-3 hours MAX! The rest of our world hasn't seemed to catch up with this ideology and it causes a lot of stress amongst millennials.


What Can I Do?


Meditating for at least ten minutes every day (I recommend an hour, but if you don't have time, ten to fifteen minutes is good enough) will do your body and mind a lot of good. For those just starting to meditate especially if you are one of those people that say "I can't meditate cause I have too many thoughts going on in my head!" Here's what I recommend:

Sit in one spot and focus on your breathe. You will be surprised at how quickly your thoughts just disappear once you focus on your breathe.

  2. Plan for it. Put it in your calendar and set a timer on your phone.

  3. Play some meditation music (I like to use binaural beats on YouTube), I've also heard that the Calm.com app is amazing!

  4. Journaling your thoughts during meditation is also helpful. It gives you spots to work on in your life as well.


I Don't Have the Time to Just Sit There!


I feel like everyone (who hasn't tried it) says this and I have to say, that those guys are wrong! For real, if you think you don't have enough time to meditate you are very wrong. To me, that's like someone saying that they don't have time to work out or eat right. If there's something that could better your chance at living a good, strong, healthy and fulfilling life, why wouldn't want to do it? You will make the time for it. There are 24 hours in a day, there should be some time for you to plan at least ten to fifteen minutes of quiet, peaceful meditation.


I am an Entrepreneur! I Have No Idea How Any of This Will Benefit Me!


If you are an entrepreneur, you need to meditate the most out of everybody! As an entrepreneur, I've gotten some of my best ideas when I step away from my business for a few hours. This might not work for everyone, but it definitely works for me. Getting some quiet time or even doing something else (I was cleaning my kitchen when I got the idea to do coaching instead of management), will give you some of the best ideas you will have for your business. You might come up with new systems, structures, plans, products or services while spending this time away.
