Using WhatsApp for Your Spiritual Business

How many of you guys use WhatsApp? There's a pretty big chance if you are outside the US, you have an account, in fact, there are two billion users on WhatsApp right now. If there is one social media platform that the US has still not caught on yet, it's WhatsApp. I cannot even begin to explain how much opportunity there is for you to grow on there. It's almost as big as getting on TikTok right now and I don't need to explain how much room for growth there is on that platform. WhatsApp is an amazing way to connect with all of your customers or clients. While there aren't any ads on there yet, there will be. This is why it's so important for you as a business owner to get on this platform, so you can get the benefits of all the organic reach.

Get a Phone List!

A phone list these days is just as important as an email list. Almost everyone has a smartphone now, and it's so important to learn how to text or send DMs to your audience. As far as actually getting a phone list together, this is something you can always ask in a form, or most would just tell them to call you and give them your number. Once you have your list together, then you can decide how you want to play this. Do you go the group text route or do you go the individual text route?

Group Text Vs Individual Text.

So which is better? Group texting or individual texting? There is no right or wrong answer here because again, it all depends on what you do as a business? Are you a yoga studio that also sells apparel? Or are you a life coach that sells lots of courses? Group chats or texts are best when you are trying to sell to a wider audience, like a metaphysical shop or a local fashion boutique for example. If you are more of a one on one person and you have built your business based on personal relationships, like a coach would, then an individual text would work.

How Do I Get Them to Sign Up?

You can get people to sign up for your individual or group texts in one of three ways.

  1. Put a WhatsApp icon on your website and tell them to text you at your business number to receive promos

  2. Send out an email blast of your WhatsApp promo. (Do a giveaway, discount on your items if you sign up now, etc)

  3. Just ask! There's no harm in asking your customers or clients for their phone number or telling them if they mind sending them texts of all your latest updates.

What Kind of Content Do I Post?

There's plenty you can post on WhatsApp! Treat it like any other social media platform, however, the language needs to be different, especially if you are sending texts individually. Let's say you are a crystal shop and you are also a spiritual life coach. Your messaging would be incredibly different on WhatsApp than let's say Instagram or Facebook. You want to send texts individually about different promotions but you do not want to do it in a typical sleazy way. It needs to be intuitive so to speak. In this case here is what I would do: I would send a text saying

"Hey Irene,
Loved seeing you at the store today! I am so glad you loved the Tiger's Eye! I know that you love yoga, so I wanted to let you know that we will be offering yoga classes on Tuesday nights now, and we will also be doing yoga certification classes as well! Since I know you said you wanted to get back into teaching again!
Let me know if you are interested and I'll sign you up. PS: If you get back to me before the end of the week I'll give you half off of any crystal you want to buy!"

This message is personalized for the individual for the specific yoga classes on Tuesday nights she wants to sell as well as the yoga certification class. There is also an incentive to get people to sign up quickly as well.

Why Does Texting/Messaging Matter?

Here are some important stats to consider:

  • 65% of the world's population (about five billion people) receive texts or SMS messages.

  • 68% of consumers would like to use mobile messaging to contact a company with billing questions or concerns.

  • 53% of consumers say they feel more positive toward a brand that uses mobile messaging to communicate.


With how people are connecting these days, it's really important to figure out how you are going to target your market for 2020 and beyond. It's simply not enough to have just an email list anymore, and a few hundred likes on social media. The way people are connecting is more personable and relationship-based. This is why I think if you are going to be doing group texts, it needs to be with the people you would love to text to. You can, of course, put a sign in your store that says "text to this number to get on the WhatsApp group" (you can also sign up for a free text messaging service on the US side but that's another post for another day). You can also just ask people in your yoga or CrossFit class if they want updates on class schedules in their WhatsApp group.
